How to Train Your Employees to Be More Effective
Carolyn B. Thompson
Think you can't afford to provide training for your employees? You can't
afford not to - you're losing money every minute you wait to improve their
skills and productivity!
Training:
Meets your mission
Provides consistency for your products and services
Provides new employees with the skills to succeed
Makes them more confident because they want to do a good job
Promotes safety on the job
Allows a person to contribute to and feel part of the team sooner
Affordable training is an investment
Often smaller companies say they can't afford training or... they don't
have time to train. In reality, you can't afford not to train!
Training doesn't have to be expensive to be good:
Create your own in-house training videos with a camcorder.
Use your office computer to assist in the production of manuals and
training tools.
When developing training:
Analyze each job to determine the best way to train.
Develop a good outline of the process.
Create visual tools that will assist the learner while on the job.
Determine an inexpensive way to test the effectiveness of the training.
Training must be continuous to be effective.
People need training from the time they join your company until they
leave. Training always enhances their skills...and that helps you continue
to meet YOUR mission.
When to train:
all new employees
if you notice a weakness within a current employee
to provide an advancement.
any time there is a new product or service within your company
How do you train?
People learn in many different ways. For this reason you'll use a
combination of training systems and tools, such as:
Video
Classroom with and instructor
On the job training with managers and key employees
Computer based
Self study manuals
You need to have employees demonstrate competency after training. You can
evaluate training performance by the use of simple tools, like a written
or verbal test or observation of specific skills.
Training is a must! When done well it provides organizations with
productive, safe, confident employees. It improves profits by increasing
customers, reducing injuries, reducing errors, reducing employee turnover
- in short, your company can make a lot of money with well trained
employees!
