Ten Commandments of Performance Management

Consider these management "commandments" :

1.  Thou shalt involve thine employees in the design of the performance management program.

Here's an example of how I can (or do) achieve this:

This is an area I'd like to improve upon. Send me ideas!

2.  Thou shalt go out of thy way to recognize top performers.

Here's an example of how I can (or do) achieve this:

This is an area I'd like to improve upon. Send me ideas!

3.  Thou shalt allow thy employees to fail (even your son!).

Here's an example of how I can (or do) achieve this:

This is an area I'd like to improve upon. Send me ideas!

4.  Thou shalt tie a large part of managers' own performance appraisal to how well they plan for, encourage, and assess the performance of their employees.

Here's an example of how I can (or do) achieve this:

This is an area I'd like to improve upon. Send me ideas!

5. Thou shalt base performance decisions on actual work results, not on personality traits.

Here's an example of how I can (or do) achieve this:

This is an area I'd like to improve upon. Send me ideas!

6.  Thou shalt link each individual's goals to the business' overall goals.

Here's an example of how I can (or do) achieve this:

This is an area I'd like to improve upon. Send me ideas!

7.  Thou shalt realize that telling thy son, daughter, mother, father, brother, etc. that they've done a poor or a good job is not easy.

Here's an example of how I can (or do) achieve this:

This is an area I'd like to improve upon. Send me ideas!

8.  Thou shalt not succumb to the temptation simply to design a form and call it a performance management program.

Here's an example of how I can (or do) achieve this:

This is an area I'd like to improve upon. Send me ideas!

9.  Thou shalt train managers (including thyself) to give and receive meaningful performance feedback.

Here's an example of how I can (or do) achieve this:

This is an area I'd like to improve upon. Send me ideas!

10.  Thou shalt treat employees as adults and with respect, and not lose sight of the fact that they are people, not just your family members.

Here's an example of how I can (or do) achieve this:

This is an area I'd like to improve upon. Send me ideas!
