Keep Your Training Investment from Walking Out the Door
After enduring an elaborate selection process, Rick was hired as a
territory manager for Ecolab, Inc., a $3 billion-a-year sanitation
products company. He was led to believe that it was a sales position, and
was unpleasantly surprised to discover that he was expected to maintain
and repair equipment for Ecolab customers. Ecolab gave him some training
on equipment maintenance and repair, but he wasn’t comfortable being a
mechanic. Rick soon left and found a sales only position at Sofco, Inc. a
paper goods company.
Ecolab uses Softco’s salespeople to represent its products in some of
their territories. Enter a flexible approach. So, Rick’s Ecolab manager
talked with him and he’s now a valuable outsourced salesperson,
especially because Ecolab is having difficulty filling Rick’s old
position.
Managers need an approach to employing people that is flexible enough
to mix and match staffing options and fill their needs with the best
talent available at any given moment.
