In 1982, Carnegie Mellon researcher Scott Fahlman was
frustrated by the lack of vocal clues and facial
expressions in e-mail, online chat, and instant
messaging. He proposed that people express their
feelings through the use of self-invented ASCII
hieroglyphs, using keyboard characters to draw digital
"smiley" faces. The rest is history.

IDEAS TO INSPIRE

2001 Great Inspiring Ideas
*LEARN MORE, EARN MORE
The Gold Star program in Argosy Casino's food and
beverage department allows back-of-the-house employees
to add fifty cents to their hourly pay for each new
skill they learn. Employees have the chance to cross-train in different areas, from janitorial to kitchen
prep and cashiering. "The onus is on the employee to
join the program," says Patrick J. Farrell, director of
human resources. Once they sign up, employees meet with
their manager, who reviews their performance. If reviews
are good, cross-training begins. Between 80% and 90% of
employees take advantage of the program. "Not only is
retention higher, the program gives us added leverage
during hiring. Potential hires see that there are
opportunities for advancement in both pay and responsibilities, which is an incentive to work here,"
says Patrick.

*STOCKING EMPLOYEE PANTRIES
David Paul's Lahaina Grill gives employees the chance to
buy any of the products the company purchases at the
company's cost. Employees give their orders to the chef,
who places them with the appropriate vendor. The items
are invoiced separately and paid by the company; and
employees have the option to pay in cash or have the
amount deducted from their paychecks. "The majority of
purchases are made by employees for special occasions
and holidays," says operating partner John Alderson.
"Employees really value this perk," says John, "because
everything is so expensive on Maui and it's difficult to
get quality and specialty food items in consumer
markets. We like to do as much as possible for employees
because it comes back to us 100-fold."

*REPAYING LOYALTY
In response to an employee who asked to borrow money to
buy a car, Tom Berkes, owner of Espiritu, started an
informal auto loan program. He purchases a car and then
negotiates the amount of the interest-free loan with the
employee and deducts it from each paycheck. The loans
have lasted from three months to two years. "It's really
the equivalent of giving someone an advance on their
paycheck," explains Tom. His only cost is the interest
he would have made if the money had been in the bank.
Most of the loans are made to members of the kitchen
staff that has a turnover rate of just 2%. "I can't
afford to do a lot for my employees benefit-wise, but
this is one way I can repay them for their loyalty and
good work," says Tom.

TRAIN SO THEY'LL LEARN

2001 "Kill 2 Birds With One Stone" Training &
Inspiration Ideas
When Reston, VA-based Cysive Inc. needed to train employees about its latest software product, the company
staged its first-ever bowling competition.

The idea was to introduce Cymbio, Cysive's new
integrated software multi-platform for assembling,
managing and delivering content from an array of
enterprise systems, by giving employees firsthand
experience with the product. Each four- to five-person
bowling team was given a personal digital assistant to
enter their scores. Cymbio automatically kept track of
scores and standing in real time. Teams were able to
track their standing in the competition as compared with
co-workers who are literally bowling across the country.
"This allowed our employees the chance to use the
technology, understand it and to really get them excited
about the product," said Kristy Brown, human resource
manager. "It also served as an opportunity for us to get
employees' feedback on the product before it was
launched. We think that is quite valuable." Employees
were divided into cross-functional teams including
senior management. Prizes ranged from restaurant
certificates to wireless applications selected from
Cysive's own product line.

The bowl-a-thon also served as a replacement for one of
the company's two annual employee trips, scaled back as
a result of the slowing economy. Previously, Cysive
typically flew all its employees to places such as Club
Med or Aspen twice a year - once as a company-only event
and once with their families.

RETAIN THE BEST

2001 Incredible Retention Strategies: Whether You're
Keeping Them Now or Laying Them Off, You Can Keep Them
Loyal
() As America gears up for a War on Terrorism, a large
number of reservists are being called up for what is basically an indefinite tour of duty. Understanding the
rights of reservists and how to compensate for the
missing employees is crucial. Here are two websites
that may help get you up to speed: http://esgr.org/faqemployers.html and http://dol.gov/dol/vets.
from NAWDP Advantage

() United Airlines is offering free computer skills to
laid-off United employees and their families through
Vcampus Corporation. Thirty-two courses will be offered
free for 90 days through United's web site. After that,
the courses will cost a nominal fee. For more
information about Vcampus and its 4,000 web-based
courses, call 800-915-9298 or go to http://www.vcampus.com.
from NAWDP Advantage

() The best ways to build employees' trust, according
to the survey of more than 200 companies by Manchester
Inc. are:
>Maintain integrity, selected by 58% of respondents
>Openly communicate vision and values (51%)
>Show respect for employees as equal partners (47%)
>Focus on shared goals more than personal agendas (38%)
>Do the right thing regardless of personal risk (36%)
>Listen with an open mind (33%)
>Demonstrate care & compassion (22%)
>Maintain confidences (15%)
from Manchester Inc.: Help for Human Resources

()In a survey conducted by the Society for Human
Resource Management and eePulse in response to
September 11, 5,673 HR professionals anticipated:
>Employees will be more caring toward each other (66%)
>Tighter security measures will be adopted (56%)
>Employees will see travel as less glamorous than
before (52%)
>Business travel will be curtailed (37%)
>Employees will be more wary of working in high-rise
buildings (35%)
The survey also revealed that just 54 percent of
employers had a disaster plan in place - a figure that
is sure to rise. Immediately after the tragedy 83%
permitted employees to watch TV or listen to the radio
at work, 51% allowed time off, 50% collected donations,
and 49% encouraged the use of employee assistance
programs.
From The Human Resource Department Ltd.

() The strain of laying employees off in tough economic
times can lead to neglect of the valued employees who
remain. Employers can head off this potential double
whammy - losing staff strength while possibly weakening
the faith of remaining employees - by communicating
about layoffs honestly and tending to the concerns of
those still on board. A recent survey conducted by the Andersen consulting firm with Knowledge Systems &
Research pointed out how many "survivors" are left
scarred after a round of layoffs.
>More employees (47%) found out about staff cuts
through the rumor mill than through official
communications (43%).
>46% reported lower morale in the six months following
layoffs may be an unavoidable phenomenon.
>46% also rated their employers poor or fair in
honesty.
>50% judged their employers poor or fair in recognizing
their value.
>11% felt inadequately supported.
>The top matters of concern in the aftermath of layoffs
were work environment/culture change (21%).
>No signs of restructuring (21%).
>Additional layoffs (19%).
>Workloads had increased for 33%.
>Workloads had increased "greatly" for 20%.
