everyone thinks you’re “at your desk”. Here are great
suggestions from people on the “Training & Development” listserv:

Provide Lunch for Saturday Workers!
Hoyman, Dobson & Co., a CPA firm in Melbourne, Florida,
believes in keeping employees happy even when they are
stressed. That’s why the firm with approximately 51
employees, supplies its Saturday employees (about half
work on Saturdays) catered full-course luncheons ordered from local restaurants. Lunch in not restricted to
employees: spouses or children sometimes join them.
Margaret Jenkins, human resource coordinator for the
firm, says the company started the Saturday catered
lunches to prevent employees from having to take time
away from their work to find lunch, which was causing
them to stay longer. With the catered lunch,
employees can finish their work sooner and enjoy the
rest of their weekend. Food is not served just on the
weekend. Jenkins says whenever she senses a stressful
situation in the office, which may be about twice a
week, she goes to a nearby Dairy Queen, gets Dilly Bars
and walks around to everyone’s desk, offering them a
choice of flavors. “It definitely brings a smile,” she
says.

As another stress buster, the firm frequently holds a
drawing in which employees may receive such prizes as
baseball tickets, golf lessons or restaurant gift
certificates. The prizes range from $25 to $75. Jenkins
notes the perks are a good retention tool. “Anything
that we can do that will keep people’s spirits up and
make them want to come back to work the next day and
next year is definitely worth it.”
