**Be sure as you do your 2001 Strategic Plan that employees know what the company/they are up against. TVA asked their employees, "What challenges do you see for our company next year?" TRAIN SO THEY'LL LEARN

*Great idea for new employee orientation using existing people and time: Bob Schultz's organization calls it the Grassroots Orientation and Training program, which starts with identifying the individuals that people go to when they need help (the person with the knowledge & skills they need - supervisor or non-supervisor). That person is asked to become the area's coach, mentor, buddy, and friend. They then help the area's coach learn how to do one-on-one and small group training and encourage them to work with HR, the supervisor and others to help the new hire, or anyone else, be successful in the workplace. Sometimes the person is paid extra, often not.

The difference between this approach and the orientation program where everyone gets the same message is that this gets to the specifics, has a follow-up system that the person needs to be successful and is just-in-time. A huge increase in retention! The Grassroots program give continuous answers to:

How do I... Where is... Who do I call for, or when... How can I... When do I... Why is...
