Develop a Corporate University
to Attract and Retain Employees

Fortune Magazine confirms in their annual review of the "100 Best Companies to Work for in America" that ongoing training and development is second only to stock options as a major means of attracting and keeping top talent. Here’s how they’ve turned employee development into a major perk and how you can do it, too:

  • The 100 best companies are making investments in employee education at their own facilities and are offering generous reimbursement programs. You can work with colleges, trade schools, and training companies in your area to create training that will help your employees learn in-house, or you can develop a tuition reimbursement program that fits your budget.
  • Make a resource area in your office for current training and other educational information, so that employees know you’re behind their self-development efforts. Remember to include seminars, certification programs, and association meetings as other reimbursement items.
  • When offering these educational options, make sure that you emphasize it with your candidates. Let them know that you are committed to your employee’s development and are willing to make an investment in them to equip them with the skills they’ll need in the current job and help to prepare them for their next job.

When job candidates are asked what is most important in their decision to accept a position, the number one answer is a commitment from the company’s management to develop its people. Make sure your company can give them that commitment, and you’ll recruit and retain the best employees!
